The Alliance & Leicester group trace there origins back a long, long way – well over 150 years! It all started back in 1852 with the formation of the Leicester Permanent Benefit Society. The next key event in the history of the company occurred in 1985 with the merger between the Alliance Building Society and the Leicester Building Society. The company subsequently went on to purchase the Girobank from the Post Office at the beginning of the nineties. This event saw the Alliance & Leicester as the first ever Building Society to purchase a clearing bank.
It was in 1996 that the Alliance and Leicester first announced the expected news that it would intend to convert from a mutual Building Society to a public limited company (PLC) – providing its existing members with free shares. It was in 1997 that this actually took place whereby the Alliance & Leicester became listed as a PLC and joined the FTSE 100 index.
Since the time of its formation, the Alliance and Leicester has been ever growing and expanding. Its focus on providing customer care and satisfaction has seen it attract many customers.
The Alliance & Leicester has a wide range of different lending products that include highly competitive mortgages, secured loans and unsecured loans.
